Rally Legend Michele Mouton Honored with FIA Lifetime Achievement Award

Rally legend Michele Mouton was recently honored with the prestigious FIA Lifetime Achievement Award at the world motorsport governing body’s prize-giving ceremony in Rwanda. This recognition comes after her remarkable 50-year career in motorsport, where she made history as a trailblazer for women drivers and significantly contributed to enhancing safety standards in the sport.

A Trailblazer in Motorsport

Mouton gained fame for her outstanding performances in the World Rally Championship, where she clinched victory in four rallies, making her the only woman to achieve such a feat. Her most notable season was in 1982 when she fiercely contested for the world title while driving for Audi, ultimately finishing as the runner-up to Opel’s Walter Rohrl. Even after retiring from competitive driving, Mouton continued her involvement in rallying by organizing the Race of Champions events. She later transitioned into managerial roles, serving as the WRC manager and eventually becoming the FIA’s rally safety delegate.

Emotional Acceptance Speech

Upon receiving the FIA Lifetime Achievement Award, Mouton expressed her gratitude, saying, “Thank you. I didn’t expect this honor, thank you so much. It’s a great pleasure.” She reflected on her long-standing career in motorsport, acknowledging the passage of time and the valuable experiences she has gained over the years. Mouton emphasized the importance of safety in rallying, highlighting the collective efforts of the FIA team in ensuring the well-being of participants.

Celebrating Champions

During the prize-giving ceremony, Mouton also had the honor of awarding the champions trophies to Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville and co-driver Martijn Wydaeghe, as well as presenting the manufacturers’ trophy to Toyota’s project director, Yuichiro Haruna. Neuville expressed his elation at finally clinching the coveted title after years of hard work and dedication, emphasizing the significance of the achievement for himself and his team. The ceremony marked a moment of celebration and reflection for all those involved in the world of rallying.
