Understanding MotoGP’s Winter Break Rules and Guidelines

MotoGP fans, gear up! The highly anticipated winter break is here, and it comes with a set of rules and guidelines that every rider must abide by. From testing restrictions to training allowances, the regulations are aimed at ensuring a fair and balanced off-season for all competitors.

Key Regulations for Winter Break

According to Article 1.15.1.1 of the MotoGP regulations, full-time riders are prohibited from testing between 1 December and 31 January. This rule applies to riders and teams under contract for the upcoming season, aiming to give them a well-deserved break and limit bike development during the off-season.

While testing a MotoGP bike is off-limits during the winter break, riders are free to train on road-going machinery. MotoGP race director Mike Webb clarified that training sessions can take place at any circuit, at any time, but riders must refrain from using a bike in the same category as the one they race.

Resumption of Testing

Once the winter break ends, regular riders can resume testing in February. The resumption occurs in two stages, depending on the rider’s status and the concessions available to each manufacturer. The shakedown test at Sepang from 31 January to 2 February will be open to test riders, rookies, and regular riders of manufacturers in category D.

Following the shakedown, the first collective test will take place from 5-7 February in Malaysia, with a final pre-season test at the Buriram track in Thailand on 12-13 February. These tests are the only opportunities for regular race riders linked to manufacturers in categories A to C to ride a MotoGP bike before the season begins.

Summer Break and Future Updates

In addition to the winter break, MotoGP also observes a mandatory summer break, the dates of which vary each year based on the calendar. This break provides riders and teams with a chance to rest and recharge halfway through the season, promoting overall well-being and performance on the track.
