Oliver Solberg Penalized for Drifting on Monaco GP Circuit at WRC Opener

In a surprising turn of events at the Monte Carlo Rally, Oliver Solberg, last year’s WRC2 title runner-up, found himself at the receiving end of a five-minute penalty for what stewards deemed as “exhibition driving” at the iconic Fairmont Hairpin on the Monaco Grand Prix circuit. The incident occurred as Solberg was making his way to parc ferme following the conclusion of the final podium at the World Rally Championship curtain raiser for 2025.

Caught drifting around the famous turn, which forms part of one of the rally’s road sections, the 23-year-old Swede faced the consequences of his actions. Despite the hefty penalty, it had little impact on Solberg as he had opted not to compete for WRC2 championship points over the weekend. Instead, he showcased his skills by finishing sixth in the Rally2 class and securing the 13th position overall in his competitive debut driving a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 car.

The stewards, after reviewing video evidence, highlighted that the incident occurred on the road section en route from the final podium in Monaco at the corner known as ‘Fairmont’. Solberg admitted to the act of driving sideways in front of spectators but defended his actions, claiming he did not believe it posed any danger.

However, the stewards emphasized that the drift created a potentially unsafe situation, especially as the turn approached with many spectators standing close by. Citing Article 12.18 of the Supplementary Regulations of the 93e Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo, which strictly prohibits exhibition driving due to the lack of suitable areas, the stewards concluded that Solberg had breached the regulations and warranted the time penalty.

This is not the first instance of Solberg facing penalties for exhibition driving, as he had previously been penalized for performing donuts at the end of a Rally Portugal super special stage, costing him a WRC2 victory. Similarly, in 2022, Sebastien Ogier faced a reprimand and a €1,500 fine for exhibition driving before the Rally Spain podium.

As the Monte Carlo Rally continues to provide thrilling moments on and off the track, Solberg’s penalty serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to regulations and ensuring the safety of all involved in the high-octane world of rallying. While his actions may have been met with repercussions, Solberg’s passion and skill behind the wheel remain undeniable, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead in the WRC.
