Kalle Rovanpera, the two-time world rally champion, is gearing up for a full-time return to the World Rally Championship (WRC) in 2025 after a year of expanding his motorsport horizons through circuit racing. Rovanpera, who clinched victory in four out of seven WRC rounds for Toyota this year, made his circuit racing debut in the Porsche Carrera Cup Benelux series. The Finnish driver achieved a commendable fourth-place finish in the championship, securing wins at prestigious circuits like Imola, Red Bull Ring, and Zolder.

Transition to Circuit Racing

In addition to his success in the Porsche Carrera Cup Benelux, Rovanpera also participated in the Porsche Carrera Cup Italy and even had the opportunity to test an older generation Red Bull Formula 1 car at the Red Bull Ring. This venture into circuit racing culminated in his decision to kick off the 2025 season with a drive in the Dubai 24 Hours before embarking on the WRC’s Monte Carlo season opener.

Benefits of Circuit Racing

Rovanpera believes that his foray into circuit racing has equipped him with valuable skills that can be transferred to rallying. Reflecting on his experiences, he shared, “I have learned many things about myself and what kind of things I enjoy, and what kind of things I want to do in my life.” The insights gained from his time on the circuit have not only enhanced his driving abilities but also provided a new perspective on his career aspirations.

Testing New Waters

Recently, Rovanpera participated in the Rallye National Hivernal du Devoluy, driving a 2025 specification GR Yaris Rally1 on asphalt stages. The rally served as a testing ground for the new-for-2025 Hankook tyres fitted to his Toyota, offering him crucial mileage and insights for the upcoming WRC season. Rovanpera expressed satisfaction with the rally, highlighting the positive impact of the lighter non-hybrid version of his car on driving experience.

In the midst of his preparations for the 2025 WRC season, Rovanpera remains optimistic about the potential synergy between his circuit racing skills and the challenges of asphalt rallies. As he continues to fine-tune his craft, the rallying community eagerly anticipates his return to the competitive landscape, where his multifaceted expertise promises an exciting season ahead.
