My 2014 Ford Fusion Hates Me

Look, I’m gonna level with you. I’m not a car person. I’m that guy who changes the oil when the dashboard light starts flashing like a disco ball. (Which, honestly, is probably too late.)

But here’s the thing: I’ve had my 2014 Ford Fusion for about five years now, and I think it’s time to admit I might be doing this whole maintenance thing wrong. And if I’m being honest, I think a lot of you are too.

So let’s talk about it. Not like some know-it-all mechanic, but as one clueless owner to another. Deal?

That Time I Tried to Be a Big Shot

Last Tuesday, I was at the gas station, and this guy named Marcus—let’s call him Marcus—starts talking to me about tire pressure. I mean, who does that? But he’s all, “Hey, your tires look low.” And I’m like, “Yeah, whatever, man. I’ll check it.”

So I go to this place on 5th, right? The one with the big air pump out front. I’m standing there, trying to figure out how to use this thing, and this old guy—honestly, he looked like he was 100—comes over and says, “You’re doing it wrong.” Which… yeah. Fair enough.

He shows me how to do it properly. Turns out, I was overinflating the tires. Who knew? Not me, that’s for sure. But here’s the kicker: I felt like an idiot. And that’s when I realized, I need to stop being a lazy jerk and start taking care of my car.

The Oil Change Debacle of 2018

Okay, so about three months ago, I decided to change my own oil. I mean, how hard could it be? I watched a YouTube video, got all the tools, and thought, “I got this.”

Big mistake. Huge. I ended up spilling oil everywhere, and my garage looked like a crime scene. My wife, let’s call her Sarah, walked in and said, “What the hell happened here?” I told her I was trying to save money, and she just laughed. “You’re gonna have to pay more than $87 to clean this up,” she said.

So, yeah. I went back to the shop. And you know what? It was worth it. No more oil on my hands, no more mess. Just a clean car and a job well done.

The Brakes Are Screaming for Help

Now, I know I’m not supposed to ignore the squealing brakes. But, I mean, I’m busy. I’ve got stuff to do. Who has time to deal with brakes?

But here’s the thing: ignoring them is gonna cost me more in the long run. I talked to a colleague named Dave about this, and he said, “Dude, just go get it checked. It’s like $200 now, or $2000 later.” And he’s right. I know he’s right. But I’m still putting it off.

I need to stop being a jerk and just take care of it. I mean, it’s not like I don’t have the money. I just don’t have the time. Or so I tell myself.

Let’s Talk About Technology

And don’t even get me started on all the new technology in cars these days. I mean, my Fusion has more computers in it than my old laptop. And I have no idea how to use any of it.

I was reading technology news developments today the other day, and it was all about self-driving cars and electric vehicles. And I’m just sitting here, thinking, “I can’t even keep my car running, and you’re telling me I need to worry about this stuff?”

But I guess that’s the future. And I need to get with the program. Or at least learn how to use the damn infotainment system.

The Air Filter Fiasco

So, I was at the shop last month, and the guy says, “You need a new air filter.” And I’m like, “Yeah, whatever.” I mean, it’s just air, right? How bad can it be?

Turns out, it’s pretty bad. I looked it up, and a dirty air filter can reduce your car’s performance by up to 10%. And it can also lead to other problems, like reduced fuel economy and increased emissions. So, yeah. I need to start paying attention to that too.

But here’s the thing: I don’t know how to check the air filter. I don’t even know where it is. I need to learn this stuff. I need to take responsibility for my car.

I’m Not Saying I’m Perfect

Look, I’m not saying I’m perfect. Far from it. I’m just a guy who’s trying to figure this stuff out. And I’m probably doing it wrong. But I’m learning. And that’s what counts.

So, if you’re out there, ignoring your car’s needs, just like I am, let’s make a pact. Let’s promise to do better. Let’s take care of our cars, so they can take care of us.

And if you have any tips, send them my way. I need all the help I can get.
